What is this red stuff in my Gold Eagle air-tite holder?
1 Attachment(s)
What is this red stuff? I don't remember it being there when I put the Eagle in there. I tried opening it, but it is a very tough customer.
It is only red on one side. The other side is white but I couldn't get a very good picture of it. |

If you flip to the front side does it show up white? If so, I would say it is from the red paper backing that stayed attached to the round when removed from original package.

AgAuGal is probably right...could very well be residue from the Air-Tite packaging. Try scraping it off with a finger nail. |
Re: What is this red stuff in my Gold Eagle air-tite holder?
I agree. It looks like the red paper layer from the Airtite bubble-pac. I've used these Airtites often and if you're not taking your time, it's easy to have this happen or pick up lint, dust and such.
I always try to take my time when mounting coins, being careful to blow out any foreign obstacles with a blast or two from canned air. When you're doing allot of coins, it can get very tedious and your more likely to mess up. Airtites can be opened (Xacto w/ #11 or #16 blade) be careful. Don't rush and don't force it. Work your way around it slowly and evenly. You don't want to ruin the coin, crack case, snap the blade or worse, jack up your fingers. If it doesn't bother you, leave it. If you must fix it, remember plastic is cheaper to replace than gold or more importantly a finger! Maranatha, |

Maybe it's just previous owner wouldn't transfer ownership of the coin to Tinman voluntarily

Well I feel dumb now, that must have just been the paper from the package. I got it open with a razor and scraped it off. I thought I would be something more interesting. |
Re: What is this red stuff in my Gold Eagle air-tite holder?
My secret for opening air-tites without a razor is to use two small suction cups (I had a couple extra from a heater for a fish tank). Works like a charm, no damage to the air-tite and no risk of cutting myself.

Yeah, but isn't there a risk of the coin flying across the room? |
